ANCIENT EGYPT --- THE KINGDOM OF THE PHARAOHS
by Robert Hamilton, Paragon Publishing (UK), 2007
PREFACE (Cover)
The Egyptian culture, which grew and was nurtured by the fertility of the Nile Valley, developed into one of the most sophisticated societies of the ancient world. It was protected by the natural barriers of the vast deserts to the East and West and by the Mediterranean Sea to the North.
This ancient civilization endured for almost 3,000 years until its final overthrow by the Romans. Despite periods of instability, it managed to extend its influence over a wide range of peoples in the region and increase its wealth through its highly developed trade relations and a series of military campaigns.
Ancient Egypt was a civilization of extremes that rose and fell from periods of stability and prosperity to times of conflict, confusion, and desperation. These periods were often in direct relation to the rise and fall of the life-giving Nile River. While the moist and fertile Nile Valley preserved the civilization for so long, so to the arid deserts preserved many of the monuments and artifacts through which we are gaining a more complete understanding of that culture and its role in world history.
