    INTRODUCTION (Cover)

Americans today focus on a wide array of spiritual practices and traditions. The debates continue as influential leaders warn of an emerging theocracy in the White House and call for "the end of faith." This book deals with the huge cultural shifts and reversals as discussed with theologians, scientists, ethicists, and political activists on National Public Radio (NPR).

Religious traditions are viewed as rich resources for our spirits, as guides to our most important modern confusions, and as correctives for the excesses of religion itself! The book advocates a "new imagination" for the 21st century --- spiritual, political, and personal. The book provides a way to speak about "religious faith" that defuses the usual conversational minefields and suggests models, vocabulary, and practical virtues for the "vast middle" ground between the extreme bipolar value orientations that are usually the focus of public attention.

Faith is defined as being as much about questioning as it is about certainties. The tremendous capacity of faith to nourish our lives and communities, if it can be spoken about meaningfully. Better communication about issues of faith concerning the mysteries of life is vital to our personal lives as well as society since discussions of faith and ethics are often steeped in anger, fear, and suspicion.
