The first step is monitoriing your Self-Talk
1. For the next few days, listen consciously to everything you say out loud
2. Listen for the "self-talk statements" you make about yourself
3. Monitor the "self-talk of others" around you. Measure their self-talk, good and bad, against the lives they are leading. Think about how happy and successful they appear to be

This starter exercise is not an in-depth analysis. This guided self-analysis is designed to quickly boost your awareness of your own "self-talk programs" and the "programs" of the people around you
These self-analysis techniques are not meant to create any long-term changes in your habits. They are, however, an important first step in enhancing your self-awareness.
[3] The third step is editing your Self-Talk
1. Begin imediately "editing" your own self-talk when you are talking. This is you giving directions to you!
Editing your own self-talk is easy to do. You want the editing to become a habit in itself since your will be creating programs that reinforce the positive editing habit. The more you do it, the more you will benefit from the habit.
2. When you begin editing yourself, you will find yourself making better choices almost immediately. You will already be exercising more self-control!
3. You can prepare special positive "self-talk scripts" to help reinforce your new "success programs"
1. One of the most important things you can do to discover what your current "self-talk programs" are is to write down what you hear yourself saying.
Keep a pocket notebook or similar paper to write down the self-talk statements that you hear yourself saying as you go about your normal activities. This Self-Talk Monitor Log can help you to consciously listen to everything you say for the next three days. Then make a list of samples of your everyday self-talk.
2. Ask your family or friends to help you with your list. Ask people emotionally close to you for their help in identifying your usual everyday Self-Talk unless you are planning to monitor yourself privately due to sensitive issues.
3. Read your list over carefully and ask yourself what it tells you. After keeping your monitor log for at least three days, read it over several times to yourself. To help you analyze the results of your list, ask yourself the following questions:
(1) What does your list of your own Self-Talk statements tell you?
(2) Is your Self-Talk usually self-enhancing or self-effacing? Are you positive about yourself or do you criticize yourself most of the time? Does most of your Self-Talk build you up, put you wown, or let you stay even?
(3) Is the pattern of your Self-Talk the kind that you would like to actively program into your brain's long-term memory resources? Would you like to write those same statements down as lifelong directives into your memory?
(4) What are the strongest "programs" that showed up on your list?
(5) What were your "programs" about your personal life and your work life?
(6) Did you have any "programs" that came up more than once?
(7) Did you find any program that you would like to change?

Remember that the goal is to create permanent change. Follow a consistent listening plan. It is the repetition of your new "programs" that allows them to eventually conquer your old negative programs and transform them into positive plans.
